Past Co-op Student Experience
Co-op Term Experience
“My main responsibilities as a co-op student was working on drawings, mostly for projects in the design development and contract document stages. I drew up details or plans, built elevations, and picked up redlines from check sets. I modelled several existing buildings in Vectorworks (a new program learnt on the job) for projects involving renovations or demolitions. I prepared applications and other supplementary documents for projects being submitted for permit. I also did a little bit of design work, helping to develop unit plans and layouts for various projects.
The most valuable thing I got from my experience at SHA was an exposure to the business side of the practice; things like the permitting process, which is something we do not talk very much about in school. I probably learned the most just from listening in on the weekly meetings, where the whole office sits down and checks in on the status of every active project. Hearing the team strategize about how to deal with clients and the city and manage timelines and budgets was another experience I would not have gotten at a larger firm.
I would recommend SHA to other peers, especially if they are interested in multifamily housing and historic renovation projects.”

Co-op Term Experience
“At SHA my main responsibility was working on drawings and 3d models for various projects. I worked mainly in the design development and construction drawing stages of projects. I used programs like Sketch-up and Layout to work on projects in the more preliminary design stages, creating drawings to show clients building design proposals. In projects at later stages, I used Vector-works for creating 3d models that included wall and floor assemblies as well as other building details to make drawings that could be used for final documents.
During my term here I also got to work on a couple of design charrettes. These were a great way to learn, because I got to work on my own design for a potential project and in the end see how everyone else approached the same project and met its design requirements.
I feel that I was able to learn a lot while working at SHA. I got to experience how projects are taken out of the design development stages and made more exact, further checked against building bylaw and zoning, and detailed so that they can ultimately be built. I also got to see how the firm interacts with the city’s planning and development office.
I would strongly recommend SHA to my classmates. You get amazing experience here, learning how to create drawings that show the level of detail that allow them to be built, which is something that you don’t often have time to do in your projects at school.”

“Most of the work I did at SHA was to assist project leaders with drawings and model making. Due to the large amount of work in the office, I had the opportunity to work on around 30 different projects to various degrees. I have worked on context site plans and existing building models for future design, building plans, elevations, and sections. I helped with details and schedules for demolition permits, rezoning, DP or BP applications, and schematic design for building façade and landscape as well as renderings for panel meetings. I have worked with principals, chief architects, basically all levels.
Most of the projects I have been involved in are rental apartments, townhouses, and single-family houses. I also get the chance to work on few commercial shopfronts, mixed-used buildings, commercial spaces and manufacturing office spaces. The most difficult part I find is to push myself to be able to work on different types of projects in various stages. The other thing is to work based on by-law and building codes here which is a little bit different from how it was in China. Familiarizing myself with wooden structure is also a challenge.
I definitely have learned so much regarding design and structure. I’m lucky to be able to participate in different stages of design, even in client meeting and contract signing, which is a rare opportunity. I also learned so much about the workflow, management, culture and work ethic during this co-op term. But what is most precious for me is to know the nice and hardworking people here. I definitely recommend other peers who want to get more experience out of their co-op term.”

“At SHA my responsibilities evolved with my capabilities within the firm. When I first arrived in Vancouver my responsibilities were essentially just to arrive at work on time and to help with whatever minor drawing tasks I was given for the day. As I became more comfortable with Vector-works I was given more and more responsibilities, which included modeling an existing building and then continuing to model the proposed renovation on said building; working with project architects to complete drawing sets in both the DP and BP stages of the building process; and I even had the chance to sit in on city meetings for some of these projects.
I worked happily and effectively with almost everyone at the firm, from intern architects to project architects, as well as the principals of the firm. I am happy to say that I learned an immense amount over my 4 month Co-op term, no matter whom I was working with or what level of “person(s)” they were, everyone was easily approachable if I had any questions and I always felt well prepared by my superiors whenever I began a new task.
I worked primarily on single and multi-family residential dwellings, but because of the office’s open studio and social nature, I was exposed to a wide range of other projects that my co-workers were working on along side me. These projects included industrial, commercial, mixed-use and laneway infill buildings.
The rain! WOW, does it ever rain a lot in Vancouver! When I am being paid to do something interesting, but difficult, it does not seem hard, but rather it feels more like a challenge. Learning Vector-works was a challenge at first, one, which I was able to quickly overcome. So were some of the drawing deadlines that I was given, all in all, my Co-op term has been a challenge, but a fun one at that and when I leave I will be leaving with new knowledge and experience that I would not have been leaving with if I had not been challenged.
Before SHA I had never worked in a traditional office setting before, let alone an architecture firm. Every day here I gained experience interacting and working in this kind of a work environment, something I would still be lacking had I not done my co-op term here. Along with that, I learned an immense amount about the Zoning and Building By-Laws in Vancouver as well as the day-to-day interactions between architects and the city in which they work and how these interactions can either expedite or prolong the building process. Finally, I learned to design a building that could actually be built!
YES! I’d recommend SHA to anyone who asked and probably to anyone who didn’t…“

Tommy is a second year student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. His primary interest in architecture is not necessarily physical, rather, it is the intangible qualities of design that drew him toward the profession. Buildings have the ability to become the settings of our memories, design often comes infused with it’s creator’s values, and centuries later it is not people, but their designs, that share their history with the future. It is at this confluence between material and meaning that Tommy’s primary architectural interests can be found. When he is not working or studying, Tommy is likely traveling; in search of great conversations with people and/or their designs.
Education + Credentials
Tommy is currently a candidate for a Bachelor of Architectural Studies, Honours, Co-op, from the University of Waterloo. He looks forward to the opportunity to utilize his design and drafting skills and the practical experience gained while working at SHA.

“My primary responsibility at SHA was producing and revising all manner of architectural drawings, but I was trusted with a wide range of tasks, from hunting through microfiche to find existing drawings, to setting up city appointments and corresponding with clients. Over my four-month term, I worked with all levels of the team to assist with details, revisions and presentation drawings for larger multi-family or commercial projects, and was given a chance to handle drawing sets fairly independently for single family residential and infill projects.
Learning Vectorworks, a new program for me, and familiarizing myself with the ins and outs of Zoning Bylaw and development applications were challenges, but I was able to meet them by asking lots of questions, all of which were met with enthusiastic explanations from my co-workers.
The most unique aspect of working at SHA was the insight into what it takes to get buildings built, start to finish. Day to day I was able to observe the management of a mid-size firm, the workflow and collaboration involved in making projects of varying sizes happen, and the (surprising) timelines involved. Although school continues to prepare me to take on design challenges, this work term offered exposure to every other part of being an architect, from detailing and diving into the building code to working with consultants and clients, and what it means to work within the bureaucratic building process.
I would definitely recommend SHA to my classmates; not only is the office culture warm and collaborative (you quickly become part of the team through fitness Fridays and team lunches), but it is a great learning experience: questions are encouraged, and everyone is invested in your success.“

“Stuart Howard Architects marked a transition period for me as I made the switch from business to design. Between the mad rush to learn Vectorworks and deciphering the language of architecture, my first few weeks were hectic, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. The team at SHA was incredibly accommodating, from answering code questions to explaining office procedures. Everyone made me feel welcome from the get-go and excited to come to work every day.
My responsibilities were broad, including research of specific bylaws and zoning, drafting of existing plans, detailing components of houses, and providing administrative support on over 20 projects. I learned the value of scheduling as a firm, as different projects were in different phases that required varying levels of work. My four months were mainly focused on a couple of projects, while I helped out on others when needed. On my last day at SHA, I was extremely gratified to learn that a project I’d worked on for four months had received its building permit (I found out in my final 10 minutes!).
The office culture at SHA was incredible, from Tuesday lunches to Fitness Fridays, with everyone put in positions and encouraged to interact with each other. You get to know one another quickly, which makes the office quite cohesive. This open communication pays dividends during stressful periods, when coworkers team up to help each other and meet tough deadlines. This communication starts with Stuart and Neil, who lead weekly office meetings to go over every project the firm is involved with. While those meetings were dense with information, it was super interesting to hear what everyone was working on, and a great opportunity to learn about the variety of projects and challenges the firm is involved with.
An aim of my co-op experience was to learn about the politics of design, and lessons were fast and often. In Vancouver, architecture is inextricably linked to code and the municipality, with each project a juggling act of design and bylaws. My responsibilities included writing energy reports and application forms, filling out professional schedules, coordinating with other professionals and communicating with city officials meet their requirements. Delving into the Vancouver building code was eye-opening, and although I only scratched the surface, I gained an immense appreciation for the precision-planning and research architects are involved in.
While most of my responsibilities were in drafting and researching, I was also able to participate in meetings with city officials, clients, and contractors. Being exposed to all their different ways of communication and requirements was invaluable. I learned that complications arise at all stages of a project (particularly with renovations), and a large part of an architect’s job is being able to plan for the unknown and to adjust on the fly.
I am extremely grateful to Stuart, Neil and the entire SHA team for taking me in and teaching me for four months. The leap from business to design had a steep learning curve, but there is no place I would rather have made it than at Stuart Howard Architects.”

“As a student intern at SHA, I had a range of responsibilities including working on design competitions, tackling façade designs, independently co-ordinating drawing sets for various stages of building applications, building 3D models, learning how to design and detail using bricks, researching zoning bylaws, and participating in drawing intake meetings at City Hall. During my 8 months with SHA I worked on around 20 projects, helping out where I could best apply my skills.
I worked with almost everyone in the office, from principals to senior project managers to other interns. Everyone was very friendly and although they were busy with each of their respective projects, I appreciated that they took the time to explain tasks and talk through design problems with me.
I worked on many different residential projects, from single-family homes to townhomes, as well as one 20-storey tower and a heritage building restoration. I also contributed to some commercial/warehouse projects, and helped work on our firm’s submission to the Urbanarium Missing Middle competition.
It’s always frustrating to learn new software and I struggled with this at first while learning Vectorworks. With everyone so busy on their own projects I felt annoying asking for help, but once I realized that the whole team was interested in helping me learn, I didn’t have any problems.
Working at SHA, I’ve been able to contribute to so many different projects, all in different phases of design. I appreciated being able to work with team members at different levels in the firm, which gave me a more holistic understanding of how an architecture firm functions. The firm also hosts fun events like Fitness Friday, summertime barbeques, and chocolate chip cookie bake-offs which are really unique to SHA and made it a great place to work.
I would definitely recommend working at SHA to other classmates. I learned so much, and I think others would enjoy this experience as well. It’s great to see how to bring buildings from the page into real life while working in a fun environment in a beautiful city. Thank you to everyone at SHA who made this possible for me, and best of luck with your future projects!”
